I was in gamestore at 9:15 this morning. They had (and may still have) some Wiis. If you are a parent looking for a wii (resellers need not apply) and can collect from Cork, I'll be popping by in the next 10 minutes and can pick one up. It's a bundle - 300 euro for console + wii sports + sports accesory pack. I have mobile notifications turned on so jaiku me or phone 0868511600. I can't guarantee they'll still be there but if you're looking for one add a comment. First response only.

Realizing that 90% of @walter 's posts are now about the Wii. What's that @topgold said about believing you always are who were are at age 10? ;-) BTW, please keep it up Walter, I'm this close to buying my first console in 12 years (the Nintendo 64). Particularly since they introduced that surf board thingy - my new year's resolution is to get fit and healthy again and I can't think of a more sustainable (delusional) way of doing it :)

Sorry Walter, was in a meeting all morning. Have one being couriered in from Germany as we speak. Owe you a pint (or beverage of your choice) for the effort though...

@Eirepreneur I suspect the popularity of the wii this year compared to last year is down to people actually having had a chance to try it out. I had a blast playing wii sports with @johnm during the summer and pretty much decided there and then I had to have one.

@Evertb - if by any chance they had another Wii in Nenagh, I'm looking for one too.

Looks like this is one of the occasions when being in Dublin is not a good thing, there have been no sightings up here...

OK, play.com has bundles for €420 including console, 1 remote, wii sports and 4 games - The Golden Compass, Looney Tunes ACME Arsenal, The Bigs, Mario Party 8.

I think I can order and get it delivered to Mum as she is in the UK - but i don't want 3 of the games, and there's no nunchuck - should I bother or should I just be an adult and wait until Jan when I have my choice of them?

@ellybabes: even come January you might not have an easy time of finding a Wii. Last year, several months after the Wii had been released in the US, I still had to stalk online sites to find what stores would have the Wii in stock.

@sxoop I'm hooked on Table Tennis (the Rockstar Games edition, from makers of GTA). Some great battles between myself and my brother, real olympic stuff.

Have had one since launch day. I'd recommend Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, Zelda and Mario Strikers Charged. Excellent gamees one and all.

@ellybabes, i'd be reluctant to buy that bundle from play.com. All of the games bundled have received pretty bad reviews. This is generally a good guide on whats decent as it aggregates reviews together: http://www.metacritic.com/games/wii/

  • ellybabes

@anthonymcg - that's what I was thinking, I'm not keen on any of those games. Might pop down to Liffey Valley this afternoon and see if Game has any consoles...

I got a Wii!!!! Smyth's on the Fonthill Road near Liffey Valley. Got into the store and they had signs saying that Wii's would be on sale tomorrow morning, stopped one of the guys and asked how many would be on sale (to gauge if it was worth being down there early) and he told me they were on sale there and then. Yippee!!

cool, excellent. did ya get the games you wanted?

1 year, 11 months ago by Catherine

  • ellybabes

Just Mario Party 8 and Zelda (which I really wanted) to start with, will prolly pick up more online.

Should I really be this excited about a console???

  • jezlyn

@ellybabes: Congrats! You will have lots of fun with that console... :D

@ellybabes: Well done. Zelda is a quality game. Expect to not get much sleep this weekend. :-)

  • sxoop

@ellybabes Super Mario Galaxy is a lot of fun (even tho it doesn't make much use of the remote) and looks gorgeous. Definitely looking forward to playing this with kate. The tennis game that comes with wii sports is definitely the best of the bunch. There's a rumble mechanism so when you swing the remote and hit the ball there's a little haptic feedback - that and the subtle 'whoosh' sound that comes from the remote's speaker really makes wii tennis surprisingly immersive.

  • sxoop

    @ellybabes btw : well done :-)

  • jezlyn

@sxoop: I've heard all over the place that Super Mario Galaxy is an awesome game. My one question is, is it one of those games with a first-person perspective? If so, it's likely I won't be able to play it without getting a headache.

Finally pulled myself out after two hours of Zelda - last time I played was Ocarina of Time on the N64, this is shaping up to be just as time-consuming!! But it's great fun.

On Wii sports, tennis & bowling & boxing are great, not so keen on baseball...

Thanks for all the congrats, I'm delighted to get the console - Christmas came early!!

1 year, 11 months ago by ellybabes

  • EirePreneur

Agreed regarding Wii tennis. That was the game I spent most time playing last Christmas and will probably do again this Christmas. I saw somewhere that you can get plastic golf club and tennis racket peripherals that you pop onto the end of the wiimote which are supposed to give added realism and stave off wii elbow. Anybody got 'em?

  • dbannon

Bah. Not fair. Have to wait for santa to 'deliver' before i can play with the wii (under my desk at the office.) Maybe I can borrow a tv for the office next week.

  • ellybabes

@dbannon - that's the luxury of us not having kids!!

1 year, 11 months ago by ellybabes

  • sxoop

@ellybabes agreed re: baseball - definitely the weakest of the wii sports lot. @jezlyn SMG has a follow-camera perspective. @dbannon I have to wait too. I've done some (ahem) 'usability testing' - it was the responsible thing to do as a parent ;-)

chuckling at @sxoop's "uasbililty testing" ruse

Was a big fan of the bowling. I thought I was great at it, was getting very high scores... then I lost to my 5 year old niece.

@dbannon I'm not sure what it's called but Maplin have a box which can convert TV signals to VGA. So hookup stuff to the monitor. I use it here instead of a TV
